Sir — This refers to the article, “Indian farmers facing a Frankenstein momentIJ” (September 23) by RK Pachauri. Sooner than later, multinational agri-businesses, motivated solely by self-interest, will call the shots here in India too.
India must be prepared. It must focus on empowering its farmers and increasing their productivity. Also, more agricultural institutions must be set up under the leadership of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in various States.
The institutes must have their own seed stores, knowledge base and tried-out practices to improve yield, in a manner that cannot be breached by multinationals by offering greater incentives and facilities to the farmers.
