Banning tradition

Sir — This refers to the article, “An obscenity called the Pink Revolution” (June 3) by Sandhya Jain. There are different traditions across India where bulls are used for village festivals.

Many of these practices have been halted in the name of protecting animal rights. In Salem in Tamil Nadu, there was an age-old tradition of ‘Erudhaattam’, in which bulls from surrounding villages would be released for a free run after a puja. The owners would then take the bulls away to their respective homes. The festival has been banned, citing law and order concerns.
