Bad politicking

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Irresponsible Congress” (December 10). It is not strange to find the Congress changing its strategy — from approaching the Supreme Court so as to quash the summons in the National Herald case to now stalling the proceedings in Parliament and protesting outside the Prime Minister’s house.

It is trying to give this whole issue an emotional touch by equating the court summons for party leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s arrest after Emergency. While Ms Sonia Gandhi said that she is not disturbed, her partymen’s actions speak a totally different language.

The summons are a judicial matter. Neither the Prime Minister nor the BJP has nothing to do with them. Sadly, on one side, the Gandhis are saying that they respect the judiciary and have faith in it but on another side, they are saying that the court order is “political vendetta”.

If Ms Sonia Gandhi knows that she is innocent, then she does not have anything to worry about. Rather, if we look deeply into the National Herald and Associated Journals ltd issue, we find that not only Ms Sonia Gandhi but other senior Congress leaders like Motilal Vohra and Oscar Fernandes may also have been party to the mess.

Only a thorough investigation can bring the truth to the fore. By disrupting Parliament, Congress is doing more harm than good to both country as well as itself. Unfortunately, the nation has to pay price for the Congress’s antics. Today, Parliament has become a platform to settle political scores rather than conduct legislative business.

Congress must remember that it is fast becoming a fringe player in national politics. Such tactics will only add to its already worsened image.
