Avoiding temptation

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Makeover for cricket” (January 6). The inoculation of cricket against politics was a much-needed reform to root out corruption. By barring Ministers and Government servants from becoming office-bearers of cricket bodies, the masters of corruption can be kept away from misusing the glorious game of cricket for pecuniary advantage.

However, I differ with the panel’s recommendations to legalise betting in cricket. This sport should be free from the murky world of betting, spot-fixing, match-fixing and so on. It is better not to tempt the players, coaches, team managers and officials.

Betting and gambling are unnecessary evils. The game of skill and ‘glorious uncertainties’ must be enjoyed for what it is worth, without gambling.
