Avoid jingoism

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “As our jawans died...” (August 8). The relationship between India and Pakistan has been extremely precarious ever since the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. It is true that Pakistan has never tried to honour the 2004 commitment to dismantle terror camps in areas under its control or prevent terror attacks against India from its soil. However, brash remarks will only precipitate matters. The UPA Government has the onerous task to hold fort, and handle the situation deftly.

Also, the time is opportune  for the BJP to reveal its maturity on foreign affairs. A mere change of statement from the country’s Defence Minister is not such a grave issue for the Opposition to attack the Government, and thereby send signals to Pakistan that Indian politicians are immature and clueless when it comes to handling a crisis.

India would be better served if it explains to Pakistan why both countries need to walk the talk. It is not proper to be consumed by the ‘hate Pakistan’ sentiment on this sensitive issue.
