Avert environmental disaster with determination

This refers to the editorial, “The impending environmental disaster” by Hiranmay Karlekar (July 7). While some scientists are still sceptical about a few phenomena associated with climate change, all agree that global warming is real and that it has been caused by man in less than two centuries. While scientists battle for fine nuances of consequences of climate change, our experience globally indicates erratic and unprecedented disruption of atmospheric dynamics. The global prognosis and predictions as given by the UN present a frightening scenario for this country. It is likely that some effects of climate change will possibly decelerate our economic progress and pull our GDP down and also may have adverse effects on people’s health.

Our population is projected to be the largest in the world in little over a decade. A substantial segment of it being below poverty line, and it’s seeking a justifiable living standard yearn for a swift development. This would entail a rapid race for existing modes of development, which have already proved disastrous for our environment owing to our dependence on fossil fuels.

Our task is colossal and desperate. A delicate balance in our mission and action and a dedicated attention on our part with utmost wisdom and sacrifice may possibly avert the crisis.
