Sir — This refers to the report, “1,400-yr-old custom can’t be put on trial: Kapil Sibal to SC” (May 17). All India Muslim Personal law Board counsel Kapil Sibal’s drawing parallel between triple talaq and Ram’s birth in Ayodhya and to say that triple talaq is a matter of faith for Muslims and hence the Supreme Court cannot contest it, is absurd. The Quran has laid down detailed procedure for talaq, ie termination of marriage between a man and a woman, which spreads over a period of time and provides for re-thinking and reconciliation before materialisation of divorce between them. There is no provision in Quran for pronouncing talaq three times at one stretch, as is being presently done in many cases, even through phone, SMS, WhatsApp or in an inebriated condition, ruining the life of the women. Triple talaq at one stretch is never a matter of religious faith but a straight case of atrocity against women, discrimination, and violation of their rights.
