Arunachal crisis due to Congress's mishandling

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Arunachal conundrum” (January 28). The President is armed with the right to invoke Article 356 of the Constitution and put a State, where he sees a categorical constitutional breakdown, under the Governor’s rule. And this is what has happened in Arunachal Pradesh. But the flipside is that the Supreme Court has asked the Governor to furnish his report that led to the imposition of President’s Rule in the State.

Now, it is up to the apex court to take the final call, but I concur with the view that the sorry state of affairs has stemmed from internal bickering within the Congress. When Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, in December 2014, sacked a veteran Minister, some legislators rebelled and others who followed suit were similarly sacked. This only worsened the situation further. Clearly, this shows the mishandling of the problem by the Congress leadership in the Sate, despite the fact that the political game of toppling Governments between the ruling regime and the Opposition is not news.
