Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Sending the right signal” (September 22). Replying to a question in an interview for American news channel CNN, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Muslims of India will live for their country and die for it; they will not be swayed by Al Qaeda propaganda. His assertion was widely welcomed by Muslims and others. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit and the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid were among the few who disdainfully reacted by saying that Muslims don’t need certificates from anybody.
Significantly, CNN journalist Fareed Zakaria, who interviewed the Prime Minister, admitted he had underestimated Mr Modi, that Mr Modi believes in executing things, that he has the majority and the backing of the people, and that he wants to be a leader of a united India.
