Sir — This refers to the article, “Uncle Sam does not really care about you” (January 24) by Gautam Mukherjee. It’s a well-argued piece but the writer misses the point about American ‘exceptionalism’, which is the driving force behind almost every international policy decision of that country.
He also got it wrong on the issue of income inequality. The standard of living of the bottom 20 per cent Americans has dramatically improved over the last 60 years, and so has their per capita income.
