Allay Riyadh's fears

Sir — This refers to the article, “When the immediate dominates long-term” (June 11) by PR Kumaraswamy. One agrees with the writer that the foreign policy of an aspiring great power should not be governed by street politics.

New Delhi has always treated Saudi Arabia as a ‘Muslim’ country just to create a positive impression on the Indian Muslim populace. Unfortunately, the geo-political and strategic importance of Saudi Arabia has never been a matter of consideration for successive Governments here.

New Delhi must convince Riyadh that it does not support the aggressive policies of Tehran. It must adopt a fresh approach, transcending its traditional and parochial outlook, in its relations with the Arab world.
