This refers to the editorial, “Getting used to Greatest” (June 6). The passing away of boxing legend Muhammad Ali after a prolonged ailment of Parkinson has sent gloomy waves around the boxing world. Born as Cassius Clay on January17 at louisville in the US, Ali converted to Islam to give up his ‘slave name'. He started boxing at the age of 12 and won the heavyweight title when he was just 22.
Having won 56 of his 61 fights, Ali became the greatest boxer the world history ever had. His fans adored him and read with immense enthusiasm about his exploits in the global boxing arena, even as they glued to their transistors to listen with rapt attention the running commentary on his fights. Ali was a tenacious boxer both inside as well as outside the ring — inside, he fought for sportsmanship to entertain his fans, and outside, he fought for equality and justice for the masses, specifically the black community. Due to this, Ali was even stripped of his titles as well.
