This refers to the editorial, “Tamasha for a bungalow” (September 30). A senior politician like Mr Ajit Singh should have behaved in a more refined way. Yes, there are instances of bungalows being converted into memorials and trusts. But Mr Singh would have known that, there is already a memorial in the name of his father, Charan Singh, in Delhi. Charan Singh championed the cause of farmers, and he is far above memorials and trusts.
People of India, particularly his admirers, do not require his memorial to remember him. It is unfortunate that his name has been dragged into a controversy by his son. Moreover, a political veteran like Mr Ajit Singh should know that building memorials is an exercise in futility. However, many of our politicians thrive and bask on controversies, and Mr Ajit Singh has proved to be no exception. The dramatic dharna and the aftermath were ways to boost the veteran politician’s fading political graph.
