Advantage Hillary

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “A woman in White HouseIJ” (April 16). Ending two years of speculation and coy denials, Ms Hillary Rodham Clinton has announced her candidacy for President of the US. She is embarking on her latest, and perhaps last, bid for the White House with universal recognition and a strong base of support, particularly among women. As Secretary of State in the Obama administration, Ms Clinton had favoured a more interventionist and hawkish stance than the President on many issues. Undoubtedly, she stands for a more muscular kind of politics.

Regardless of the outcome, her 2016 campaign will open a new chapter in the extraordinary life of a public figure who has captivated and polarised the country. She was the co-star of the (Bill) Clinton Administration, the only First lady ever elected to the US Senate and a globe-trotting diplomat, who surprised her party by serving dutifully under a President who defeated her for the candidature of the party. But let the nomination come her way first.
