Adieu telegram

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Those were different days” (June 15).

It is sad that the humble telegram which brought smiles and tears for over 150 years would be laid to rest on July 15, marking the end of an era. The ubiquitous telegram, usually the harbinger of grave tidings, was also the cheapest and the quickest form of communication. Unfortunately, the telegram service operated by BSNl lost out to the more suave telephones and later the cellular phones, which have instant connectivity.

But it is not just the telegrams that have been edged out from our technology-powered world. In the age of emails and SMSes, the joy of receiving letters through post has become a distant dream. Indeed, writing letters in longhand or sending cards on special occasions to one’s kith and kin too have become a forgotten art. For many the sight of a postman opening up his bag to deliver letters/telegrams will now just be an enduring memory.
