Sir — This refers to the article, “A historical perspective on Waqfs in India” (May 15) by Prafull Goradia. The writer has put forth some interesting facts about the history Waqfs in India, including its beginning and status in many Muslim majority/Islamic countries.
In one of his earlier articles in The Pioneer, the writer had stated that the Waqf arose because of Muslim rulers confiscating the lands of Hindu subjects and suggested that in the early 1950s, when the Nehru Government abolished zamindari, it should have nationalised the Waqf properties as well. This was not done.
Waqf is nothing but a manifestation of Islamic imperialism that needs rectification. As some enterprising citizens brought the carefully hidden Article 35(A) into the lime light by knocking the door of the Supreme Court, similar efforts must be made on the highly unjustified Waqf properties.
