Aadhaar scheme was not thought out properly

This refers to the editorial, “How haste makes waste” (September 26). Ostensibly, the Congress-led UPA Government's Aadhaar card idea was widely welcomed out of an impression that it is a panacea to the aam aadmi's multiple woes vis-a-vis the proof of identification that one needs.

But all the years of labour, precious time and the astronomical amount of money spent by the Union Government have gone in vain, with the Supreme Court saying that the card is not mandatory for the citizens to secure the benefits of various Government schemes.

There is also the possibility of the card being misused by people who are not citizens of the country and are staying here illegally as immigrants. The apex court's decision on the much-hyped Aadhaar project underscores the Centre's unpreparedness to fight the case. Now that the ball is again in the Government's court, the Centre must do its homework properly, get the scheme legislated and then implement it effectively.
