This refers to the editorial, “Proud moment for India” (August 6). It is a matter of great pride for India that our junior women's hockey team won a bronze by defeating a relatively stronger England by 3-2 at the world-level tourney in Germany, held by International Hockey Federation, on Sunday.
The victory is that much sweeter and cherished because it comes after an agonising wait of decades when in the 1974 World Cup and the 1980 Olympics, India had brought home medals in the game.
With Australian coach Neil Hawgood at the helm, coaching and counseling the ‘girls in blue', one can dare to hope that a turnaround has finally happened for our national sport which had been edged out by cricket.
Indeed, with the launch of World Hockey Series, the hockey scenario has undergone a sea-change. Also, more sponsors are coming forward to invest in the game, which is not just beneficial for hockey, but is a great morale booster for the players. Hockey India has done well to award the junior team and the coach one lakh rupees each for their efforts and spectacular win.
