A litmus test of China's friendship and sincerity

Published on:

This refers to the article, “Intrusion and the farce of being friends” (May 15) by Ashok K Mehta. The writer has rightly pooh-poohed our so-called friendly neighbour's assertions of bilateral friendship as a farce, given that the provocative and brazen intrusion into Indian territory in ladakh happened days before Union Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid's official visit to Beijing, and the Congress-led UPA Government's sordid attempt to play down the incident.

As long as we have a Prime Minister who sees the Chinese intrusion as a minor, local affair; his Foreign Minister terming it an “acne” and the Union Home Minister dubbing the area of occupation as a “no-man's land”, the Indian people can forget about strong and robust action to safeguard the nation's sovereignty and integrity. It is high time that the UPA Government insisted on an exchange of maps showing the borders of the two countries to end the charade of endless border talks and settling the dispute once and for all. This will be a test of China’s sincerity.
