A legacy wasted

Sir — This refers to the article, “More of a swan song than spirited speech” (March 11) by Balbir Punj. In the first instance it was PV Narasimha Rao who as Prime Minister pushed for reforms to rescue the Indian economy which had gone bankrupt, and Mr Manmohan Singh as the Union Finance Minister had no option but to follow the diktat of his Prime Minister to pull the country out of its economic woes.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s rule saw corruption being curbed and economy being robust. It will take a couple of years for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, if he does become the Prime Minister of this country, to fix the disaster that the Congress-led UPA Government has created. Regrettably, the ruling UPA has failed to carry forward the sound legacy the Vajpayee-led NDA regime had left behind.
