A healing approach to India's suicide problem

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Progressive legislation” (April 1). Suicide is not an economic or a generational problem. The problem lies with a broadbased and terrible momentum — a result of seismic changes in the way we live and a corresponding shift in the way we die. Possibly, when one commits suicide, there comes a moment when the victim does not care for anyone, neither parents, nor family or friends, but just wants to terminate his/her life for a particular reason.

It is not so that every person who attempts suicide, is to be a mental patient. Apart from depression, people also commit suicide out of bitterness, insecurity, rejection, revenge and impulsive behaviour. Youths are more likely to commit suicide as development is forcing them to the condition of hopelessness. One must, however, keep in mind that whatsoever may be the reason in life, suicide is not a solution to any problem. One must be strong enough to face the realities of life.
