The passing away of well-known film-maker K Balachander has left a big vacuum in the Tamil film industry. His career spanned over five decades, during which he was associated with over 100 films, as either a screenwriter or a director, and every film bore his unique stamp of excellence. Many of them had a social message which inspired people and also championed women’s empowerment. Besides, he gave the first break to the now-renowned colossal actors, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.
like the name ‘Balachander’, which means the moon visible on the first day after the new moon, this director steadily grew bigger and shone brighter among the stars. He also dabbled successfully in Hindi films, including Ek Duje Ke liye. It is not surprising that film personalities cutting across States have paid tributes to him. He may not be with us physically today, but he and his films will be remembered for ever.
