A four-year degree course will benefit our students

This refers to the article, “Step towards better graduates” (April 29) by JS Rajput.

The writer is absolutely right in rooting for a four-year degree programme in Indian universities and colleges. The time to introduce this pattern of Bachelor's degree course is now.

Indian students who go for higher studies abroad, especially to the United States, are at a distinct disadvantage. In the American universities and all higher education institutes there, only a four-year pattern is acceptable. And those with a three-year degree course have to spend a lot of money to complete a ‘bridge course' before they are admitted in the Master's degree programme. A four-year study at college enhances the students' perspective and enables them to decide their specialisation better. In doctoral studies also, four years prepares the learners better.

Universities and colleges in India must, therefore, initiate a four-year course at BA/BSc/BCom levels to help students better. Again, a four-year course will equip them better for civil services.
