A failed regime

Published on:
Sir — There are high expectations from Mr Narendra Modi, who has become the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 lok Sabha election. His anointment is a refreshing change from what we see in the Congress when it comes to deciding upon a leader. The Congress’s selection process is a sham.
The people are demanding freedom from the Congress-led UPA regime and want a strong leader, such as Mr Modi, at the helm. The UPA regime has been characterised by corruption, poor governance and lack of leadership. Our foreign policy has gone haywire and our neighbours routinely infiltrate our territory. Some stay put for days together and others return after killing our soldiers. Yet the Congress-led regime has done nothing to respond to such insults.
In this grim scenario, there is talk that the Congress wants Mr Rahul Gandhi to be the Prime Minister in case the party forms the next Government. But that decision is for later; for now, the Congress must win the election, and that is unlikely.
If the Congress hopes to emerge victorious by pitting Mr Gandhi against Mr Modi, it is following a disastrous line. The Congress scion is no match for the Gujarat Chief Minister, either in public speaking or in the art of good governance. Perhaps that is why Mr Gandhi is reluctant.
