Women's safety

Published on:

Sir — It is worrisome and humiliating for India to get branded as the world’s most dangerous place for women (a perception poll by Thomson Reuters Foundation). Though ‘danger’ has not been defined or explained, it is obviously related to the sexual violence against women.

It is enraging that even after the ‘Nirbhaya’ case and following the amendments providing death sentence for rape in the related law, the incidents are on the rise.

Around 34,000 rape cases were reported in 2015 which went on to become 34, 600 in 2016. The fate of 600 centres all over the country which were to be opened for medical and legal help for the aggrieved women is not known. The pathetic condition of women in our country is a cause of concern.
