Sir — This refers to the report, “BJP rejects CM’s call for no Army ops in Ramzan” (May 11). Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has been repeatedly calling for peace talks with Pakistan without consulting her ally in the State, the BJP. This keen desire, without any back channel diplomatic effort, though a welcome
goodwill gesture, seemed a wishful thinking and, hence, it made no headway.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s latest call for a “unilateral ceasefire” by the Army in Jammu & Kashmir on the holy month of Ramzan has met with a similar fate: Her coalition partner, BJP and its Deputy Chief Minister have rejected it on the ground that a at this juncture, a “unilateral ceasefire” is not in the nation’s interest. Moreover, the security forces have established their supremacy over terror outfits by eliminating their top commanders.
At this point of time when our security forces are in a dominant position, having successfully eliminated terrorists’ top leadership, a unilateral ceasefire will only help them regroup as they did the last time when former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared such one-sided measure.
On the contrary, the Army must intensify its operation All out campaign to overpower Kashmiri terrorists sooner than later.
