Desperate move

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Grammar of justice” (April 21). The Supreme Court, while rejecting all pleas for probe in Justice loya’s death case, said that these petitions were filed for political gains. In a hard-hitting order, a three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud trashed every charge made in the petitions filed by Congress spokesperson Tehseen Poonawala, lawyer associations, a journalist and individual citizens.

At the time of his death, in December 2014, loya was presiding over the CBI court hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case in which BJP chief Amit Shah was a suspect. He died of heart attack in Nagpur where he had gone to attend a marriage ceremony. Congress and the petitioners saw a conspiracy in loya’s death and were more interested in conviction of Shah than anything else. While the Congress has questioned the judgement, lawyer Prashant Bhushan has termed it a wrong decision. Their disappointment is quite understandable.
