Sir— This refers to the article “Jinping emerges as China’s most powerful leader since Mao” (October 21) by Gaurav Misra. In all probability, the strong and assertive Xi Jinping is likely to explore avenues to propel the top brass of CPC to relax the two-term norm for the President of the People’s Republic of China so that his domination is complete. Jinping uncharacteristically marathon address to the CCP, depicting the unmistakable Xi Jinping stamp on China’s domestic and foreign policies, is seen as harbinger of things to come. Though human rights and media freedom are “dangers of western values” for Jinping.
The leader has astutely balanced market-based economy with command economy for his country. In the Donald Trump’s era of global political arithmetic, Jinping is viewed as a leader who is known to make friends with all through his diplomatic skills and suave demeanour. His OBOR initiative, hold over the South China sea, proximity to South Korea while keeping North Korea at bay, and cosying up to both Trump and Russias Vladimir Putin are all pointers.
He has made his intentions clear by announcing its “time for China to take centrestage of world politics”. That a new school of thought — “Xi Jinping thought on socialism” — is likely to be enshrined in the Communist party constitution points to the fact that Xi has been immortalised on the lines of CCP founder Mao Zedong and the revolutionary Deng Xiaoping.
