Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Costly appeasement” (September 23). The Calcutta High Court has struck down the order of the Mamata Banerjee Government in West Bengal, which bans immersion of Durga idol on the festival of Muharram on October 1.
It is a clear case of appeasement of the minorities and vote-bank politics. It has been a practice to immerse idols on at least three consecutive days after Vijaya Dashami for so long. It is the duty of the State to maintain law and order. It should draw plans to implement it.
But dividing people into lines of religion is not good for a democracy. Anything related to Hinduism and the BJP Government is being opposed tooth and nail by the Opposition, including the Trinamool Congress. This amounts to interfering in the religious sentiments of the majority people.
