Equal opportunity

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “The NEET conundrum” (September 7). The suicide of a young medical science aspirant, S Anitha, from Tamil Nadu has sparked off yet another controversy, with further changes being demanded, including the scrapping of the National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET) itself. It is clear that those who gained exorbitant amounts during the pre-NEET era are much ruffled by the new regulation which placed a ban on capitation fees and made merit the sole criterion for selection in medical colleges across the country.
The Supreme Court and the Centre must be commended for their missionary role in ensuring the medical admission system is cleansed of corrupt practices. It is high time all States pay heed to the needs of a merit-based system that is fair to all, and attune their States’ syllabus in line with the NEET pattern, to provide a level-playing field for all students, irrespective of medium, background, language or class.
