Sir — This refers to the editorial, “India’s drowning glory” (September 1). Monsoon will always be sporadic in our country because of the sheer size. But we fail miserably when it comes to having a flood control management system — it’s always reactive rather than being pro-active. leave alone big cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai, States like Assam too, faces flood almost year and we have not found a mechanism to manage the floods or to reduce the loss.
Mumbai, which faced 315 mm of rainfall, does not have the infrastructure and tools to manage even 50mm of rain. This because the people of the maximum city have unparalleled grit and determination to handle any odds. But our Government and municipal authorities need to introspect. We cannot just shut our eyes and keep compromising with nature in our quest for abnormal growth in urban areas and let natural calamities play havoc.
