Playing politics

Sir — This refers to the report, “EPS, OPS merge to purge of Sasi” (August 22). The merger of two factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu, leaving aside a tiny group supporting Sasikala is welcome, where only two political parties, either in the Centre or in the States, can be an ideal political system.

However, almost eliminating a strong opposition party at the Centre, with Congress fast losing its creditability, is also equally dangerous. With new generation totally moving away from the left ideology, the need of the hour is that some strong opposition leader emerges who can unite all anti-Bharatiya Janata Party forces to come under an umbrella of one strong and single Opposition.
