System failure

Sir — This refers to the article, “Revisiting healthcare challenges” (August 15) by Chandrakant lahariya. It is not budget constraint but corruption that is responsible for the poor standard of healthcare services in the country. Allotted funds are grossly misused. Second issue is that the system of prompt repair of equipment does not exist. Third, there is acute shortage of doctors, nursing staff, ward boys and cleaners in the hospitals. Even Government doctors prefer private practice rather than performing their duty in the hospital. lastly, hospital infrastructure has not kept pace with the growth in population. Crux of the matter is that we must judiciously utilise the allotted funds.
