Sir — This refers to the article, “Yet another round of Opposition unity” (June 7) by Kalyani Shankar. Opposition parties have seen myriad unifications but with a short shelf life. The sweeping victory of the BJP and its allies in the 2012 parliamentary election, followed by the electoral drubbing of the grand old party and other parties such as the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party at the hands of the BJP forced them all to come together.
The writer is spot on in observing that ego clash among the leaders at the helm of affairs is the stumbling block in way of political unity. But as they say, in politics, no one is permanent friend or foe and that everything is fair in love, war and politics. That’s why opposition parties are re-trying faute de mieux.
But for the sake of continuance of unity, they will have to put their egos aside and come to an understanding of the agenda that is acceptable to all or they will have to face the same music again.
