Narrow escape

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Sharif crippled further” (April 22). Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has narrowly managed to save his premiership after a Pakistan Supreme Court Bench declared that there was “insufficient evidence” to remove him from office but ordered setting up of a joint investigation team to probe graft allegations against his family in the Panama Papers scam.

For the investigative team, there now awaits a future of blind alleys aplenty, as well as the exhumation of a number of other matters of interest relating to the financial dealings of the Sharif family. The verdict has not proven the allegations made against Sharif, but it has not disproved them either, and sufficient doubt remained in the minds of all the justices for them to make an effort to uncover truths.
