Sir — This refers to the article, “Countering Right-wing success” (March 29) by Kalyani Shankar. The writer has pointed out seven significant reasons for the growing success of the BJP in the country. The most appropriate reason is that the Congress lacks leadership strategy and money power to counter the rise of the BJP.
However, it is an irrefutable fact that no party can reign for too long unless it continues to fare exceedingly well in governance. Remaining in power is more difficult than acquiring it. In politics, every leader/party has an opportunity, and when the time comes, abrupt and radical changes are bound to happen.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) that ruled West Bengal for decades together, with no threat from any quarter, ultimately withered and went into near oblivion. Rajiv Gandhi, who got an unimaginable victory in 1984, had to face a rout shortly due to a single issue. Similarly, many leaders who appeared with a bang disappeared with a whimper soon. It is fortunate that the BJP has a tall leader in Narendra Modi.
