Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Don’t shoot messenger” (January 14). Before questioning the jawans, the Army needs to ask itself what and who created the circumstances that the jawans had to take on to social media to talk about their grievances.

Our jawans guard our borders, and are posted in places of extreme climactic and geographic conditions. Proper food and clothing are basic needs and it’s the Army’s responsibility to ensure the same. That a jawan took the matter of quality of food being provided in the camp to the social media is a proof of his immense compulsion and is a question mark on the “proper forum” of redressal referred to by the Army chief.

Furthermore, is it practically possible for a jawan to jump all the channels of hierarchy and contact the Army chief directlyIJ Tej Bahadur Yadav’s social media post exposed corruption in the ration supplies to Army camps and attracted national attention. The Army administration itself needs to be vigilant to ensure that proper food is provided to the jawans and those misappropriating ration supplies of the jawans are severely punished.
