Outstanding player

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Captain Cool’s decision” (January 6). Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who resigned as India’s captain in limited-overs cricket, two years after he gave up Test captaincy, has a very high level of self-awareness.

Although he is on the final stretch as a player, people expected him to lead the ICC Champions Trophy this summer.

However, Dhoni has been unlike many great players who drag their feet in the twilight of their careers. His outstanding career has showed that professional sport need not always be about fitting in. The man who started as a football goalkeeper and became India’s first cricketing mega star from the hinterland, was India’s best natural athlete in cricket after Kapil Dev.
