Sir — This refers to the report, “De-recognise church courts, Christian body pleads SC” (December 28). The appeal for de-recognition of Ecclesiastical Courts by the Joint Christian Council is welcome. India is a secular, democratic nation and the citizens of this country come under the ambit of a single legal mechanism, irrespective of their clan/caste/religion etc.
The demand for separate legal systems for every religion is unscientific and anachronistic apart from jeopardising the spirit of secularism defined in our Constitution. In a secular democracy, Constitution is supreme and religious tenets cannot override the Constitution, particularly its secular clauses.
