This refers to the editorial, “The washout session” (December 19). The Winter Session of Parliament that ended last week, was characterised by continuous disruptions and adjournments. The symbolism of dignified protests, so essential for orderly conduct of parliamentary proceedings, was abandoned.
Traditionally, a greater responsibility devolves on the Treasury and the Chair to make the House function, which did not happen despite the BJP enjoying a comfortable majority. In India, political parties have been losing their appeal, thanks to corruption scandals and loss of credibility of our leaders. Now, successive adjournments will only erode the House’s prestige further.
