Misusing powers

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Relief amidst the crisis” (November 23). The threat of a washout is looming large over the Winter Session, with the Opposition determined not to let the House function unless the Government forms a joint parliamentary committee to probe allegations of a selective leak of its demonetisation plan.

Stalling or disrupting parliamentary proceedings is a legitimate instrument in a democracy but perhaps it’s time for introspection. The instrument was intended to expose the Government, to protest against subversion of accountability. But of late, the practice has degenerated into playing to galleries, scoring points and a means of retribution.
