Safety first

Sir — This refers to the editorial,  “learning from tragedy” (November 22). Train accidents have become a common phenomenon in India. This is due to the authorities’ lassitude in verifying safety measures.

The Centre’s alleged negligence over the Anil Kakodkar panel report, which suggested numerous measures in raising rail safety methods, corroborates the passiveness of our political/bureaucratic system is appalling.

The Government is bound to provide a fully-secured journey to train passengers. It cannot evade accountability by merely contributing assistance, from public money, to the victims or their families.
