Overhaul policy

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “‘Mother-ship of terror’” (October 18). India successfully used the just-concluded two-day Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit in Goa as a vehicle to promote its goal of isolating Pakistan, both diplomatically and economically.

The Brics declaration can help India move beyond generalities. Almost all countries, except China, have condemned  terrorism. Beijing was not keen to follow the Indian line to dub Pakistan as ‘the mother-ship of terrorism’. Maybe, the boost to the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) can further deepen Pakistan’s diplomatic isolation.

Given that China and Russia may never shake off their wariness regarding India’s growth and global aspiration, India is unlikely to achieve a breakthrough. New Delhi must change the way it perceives and deals with neighbours diplomatically.
