Faith restored

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Justice system vindicated” (October 5). It was the sheer perseverance and resolve of Neelam Katara, mother of Nitish Katara, that got her justice for her son. What is incredible is that she fought the battle alone.

Not only did she take on the might of DP Yadav, a powerful politician of Uttar Pradesh, but also proved at the end of the day that the common man can win against the mighty odds of powerful politicians.

However, what is disappointing is that it took 14 long years to bring closure to this case, which is a testimony to the fact that justice take a very long  time to be delivered in our country. Not many have the will and determination shown by Neelam Katara. This judgement will go a long way in preserving the faith of the people in our justice delivery system.

The need of the hour is to have a speedy justice delivery system. This verdict has set the right example for those who consider honour killing to be their right and not a crime. Honour killings have become common in our country. Hopefully, as Neelam Katara desires, we will soon have a law against honour killing.
