Sir — This refers to the article, “Constitution shields Muslims from mullahs” (September 12) by Balbir Punj. The fact that the triple-talaq system is still being practised in our country, 69 years after independence, is a big let-down. This not only points out to the fact that women in our country are being given secondary status, but also makes it clear that they are still dependent on men to a very large extent. Judicial intervention alone cannot provide a long-lasting solution. Women in our society need to become self-dependent so that they don’t have to be with a man just for sustaining their livelihood.
