This refers to the editorial, “Nanny’s frivolous food tax” (July 13). The Kerala Government’s decision to introduce a ‘fat tax’ is commendable for the implicit message it brings: Intake of food laden with excess fat must be avoided as it leads to obesity and other health problems.
The intention of imposing a 14.5 per cent tax on items like pizza, burger, sandwich, pasta etc, which are sold at branded upscale restaurants and food retail outlets, is to keep potential customers away from junk food.
As a corollary of the fat tax, traditional food habits and traditional food can stage a comeback among the health-conscious, yet risk-averse people of Kerala.
