Sir — This refers to the article, “From Shah Bano to Shayara Bano” (May 9) by JS Rajput. The implementation of the Common Civil Code was not only desired by the Constitution of India, but was also repeatedly endorsed by the Supreme Court. Sadly, it remains a distant dream, all thanks to the conservative Muslim clergy who promote personal laws.
It does not matter to them that some provisions like triple talaq are a source of immense suffering and humiliation to the women of their community. The irony is that these radicals invoke theQuran, emphasising gender equality, but, in practice, defend triple talaq and polygamy. With such medieval thinking, how can the Muslim clerics expect their faith to be accepted as modern and enlightened in today’s worldIJ
