This refers to the editorial, “Symbol of greed, graft” (May 2). The Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society scam is different because of the roll call of people in high offices who colluded to corner flats meant for Kargil war heroes and war widows. It was also bipartisan; politicians across party lines effected blatant violations that showed greed, nepotism and favouritism.
Now, determined to end a saga of corruption, the Bombay High Court has ordered the demolition of the housing complex and an inquiry against the politicians and officers involved in the deal.
However, the court’s ruling has turned the spotlight on the 102 members who were bona fide residents of the building and have to now bear the brunt of corrupt officials. Though politicians need to be shamed for every act of corruption they indulge in, the more crucial aspect is to understand the anatomy of corruption in each case.
