Poor management

This refers to the editorial, “Criminal callousness” (April 2). The crashing of an under-construction flyover in Kolkata is unfortunate. What is all the more tragic is that the narrow stretch of the flyover has made rescue operations all the more difficult. On top of it, the Hyderabad-based company, IVRCl, has categorised this tragedy as an ‘act of god’ to shy away from taking ownership of the accident.

On the other hand, this tragedy has once again highlighted the fact that disaster management is still very poor in our country. After each tragedy, we talk about improving disaster management, but we subsequently forget about it and brush it under the carpet. The Union Government must now ensure strict monitoring of construction sites and safety norms for construction workers on the site.
