Sir — This refers to the report, “Pranab pitches for speedy justice for all” (March 14). President Pranab Mukherjee has rightly called for speedy disposal of court cases. Nearly three crore cases are pending in various courts. The addition of cases is outnumbering the disposal of cases. Inordinate delays in disposal of cases should be a cause of grave concern.
A time-frame should be given to the judges to dispose cases on the basis of merit. Chief Justice of India TS Thakur too has rightly lamented that the Bar at times is “not cooperative” even if judges put in extra hours.
It is appalling that, despite mounting number of cases, the number of hours of work in courts has not been increased. Deputing judges for training for months, long summer and Dussehra vacations, grant of too many adjournments, not creating additional posts of judges with the increase in number of cases and not filling up the vacant posts of judges, are the contributory causes for delayed delivery of justice.
